The activities of 1308 Productions have always included a recognition of the invaluable efforts of outstanding music educators. Through our support of youth music performance events, school music programs, and our annual scholarship awards, we have continuously been appreciative of the multi-faceted vital roles that music teachers play in the lives of students. As 2020 has come to a close and 2021 has begun, we turn the spotlight on Ray Modia who retired in 2020 after 39 years as an awesome force for incorporating music into the lives of thousands of students, their families, their schools, and their communities.

Ray Modia, now a legendary educator and band director for Miami Dade Public Schools, started in 1981 and just recently retired after an amazing career in education. Best known for his work at Nautilus Middle School on Miami Beach, he has also taught at Florida universities, and at churches and programs throughout Florida and the western hemisphere. He has served as a judge of the Florida Band Masters Association, as Director of the Department of the Arts at Nautilus, and as Director of the Christian Symphonic Band of Guatemala.

“Modia”, as he is affectionately known to his students, is also an internationally performing professional musician who continues to showcase his talents and his teaching method known as Seminario de Musica. Mr. Modia has performed with famous artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Alex Acuna, Davis Sanborn, Kevin Scott, and the Buena Vista Social Club. He was a Grammy Award Nominee in 2017 and in 2014, and has been honored with awards from the City of Miami Beach, the Town of Surfside, the National Association of Police Athletic Leagues, the American Legion, and as the Council for Exceptional Children Mainstreaming Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Modia earned his Associate Degree from Miami Dade College, his Bachelors Degree from the Barry University, and three Masters Certifications from the University of Miami in Music Composition, Music Technology, and Jazz Studies. He has taught and led student jazz bands, symphonic bands, and guitar ensembles. His students have gone on to study music in high schools, colleges and universities, and other advanced programs internationally.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ray Modia has – and continues to – be known by all as a dedicated, highly skilled, enormously caring educator who has won the admiration, respect, and appreciation of students, other teachers, school administrators, and professional musicians. For all he has done for music education in particular and for so many other people in general, 1308 Productions proudly shines this light on a truly extraordinary educator and person. Thank you Ray Modia, and we will be watching as you pursue more great achievements in the years to come!
